Some people get inspired by the latest advances in Science, others turn their face to the past. In a world that drives too fast, I thought it would be nice to stop for a second and look around. Find the beauty in the small, everyday things and go back to the roots.
Traditional handcrafts for the modern life
Looking for serenity, harmony and peace, I found Shibori. It was easy to fall in love with this traditional Japanese art, since Shibori is a dyeing technique well known for using Indigo, the magical plant that gives an amazing deep blue.
With Shibori you can create beautiful geometrical shapes on fabric or in my case, paper.
The Shibori Collection: Inspired by the deep Indigo blue
The Shibori Collection by Indigo Craft Room is fine, classic and powerful. The geometrical shapes on the paper are created following the traditional tie techniques of Kumo and Itajime.
Tie and dye
For the Shibori Collection I only use Japanese paper, which is the most convenient for this technique. First I fold or tie the paper using materials like linen thread, wooden sticks or even marbles and jar caps. Anything with a round, square or triangular shape is suitable to press the paper in between. Once the paper is ready, I dip it into the Indigo bath for a couple of minutes and wait to see the magic of dyeing happen.
The Shibori Notebooks are the ultimate Japanese experience: made from Shibori dyed paper and hand bound with the Japanese stab binding technique… not just for Japan lovers, but for people delighted to have a piece of traditional art on their hands.
The Marbling Collection: Because life is full of colour
When you are happy you see the life in thousands of colours, Indigo blue is sometimes not enough. When you need some extra power and vitamin D for your day, the Marbling Collection is there for you.
I know, when I heard my bookbinding teacher talk about making marbled paper I also thought: isn’t it old fashioned? But using a traditional technique does not mean you have to make old fashioned design.
The Marbling Collection is full of colour, young and fresh. I paint literally on water to create one-of-a-kind patterns. Improvisation plays an important role here, since the marbling ink floats on the water and, even if you try to reproduce a pattern, you cannot always be sure if it will look the same. When the ink comes in contact with the water everything can happen: and so is magic made!
